Daly River flooding: update 4 - 10 February 2026

The river reached 14 metres (major flood level) at the Daly River Police station at 4pm, Monday afternoon, 9 February.

A Watch and Act alert remains in place for the river – which means avoid the area. Conditions are dangerous and intensifying.

Disaster assistance activated – Victoria Daly region flooding

Disaster assistance will be activated this week for Victoria Daly regional communities following flooding caused by widespread rainfall from a slow-moving weather system.

River levels have risen toward expected major flood levels. To ensure community safety, residents from Daly River were evacuated to the Foskey Pavilion Evacuation Centre in Darwin on Wednesday 4 February 2026. Floodwaters are expected to continue rising this week.

Residents are advised to continue following directions from emergency authorities.

Disaster assistance available

The assistance is jointly funded under the Commonwealth–State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) and includes:

  • Category A assistance
    Immediate Relief and Personal Hardship and Distress payments to support immediate relief, temporary accommodation and re-establishment for eligible individuals and families.
    • Category A Immediate Relief payments have been activated for eligible individuals and families affected by evacuations within the Victoria Daly Regional Council area who usually reside in the impacted area.
    • Payments of up to $152.75 for individuals and $384.25 for families are now available. This is equal to 25% of the full payment and will be provided upfront via prepaid cards that cannot be used for alcohol, pornography, or gambling. The remaining 75% will be made available once residents are able to return to their community and floodwaters have receded.
  • Category B assistance
    Support for counter-disaster operations and the restoration and reconstruction of essential public assets, including emergency works and infrastructure repairs.

Eligibility

  • Category A assistance applies to eligible individuals and families affected by evacuations within the Victoria Daly Regional Council area.
  • Category B assistance supports state agencies and local governments responding to and recovering from the event.

Evacuation centre

Two hundred and ninety eight people are currently staying in Foskey Pavilion, including 110 children. Another 10 residents and carers are staying at Free Spirit resort where they can attend to special needs. Some people who had been staying at Free Spirit have now relocated to Foskey.

Young people staying at Foskey will attend local schools until they can return to community. There is no pop-up school in the evacuation centre.

Other activities are also arranged for residents at Foskey to ensure children and adults have opportunities to engage in physical activity and other entertainment.

The evacuation centre at Foskey is an alcohol-free area and security is onsite for the safety and security of evacuees, staff and volunteers.

Pets cannot be taken to Foskey Pavillion evacuation centre.

Boil water alert – Daly River Community

Recent heavy rainfall and flooding may have impacted the community water supply.

NT Health advises residents to use bottled water or cooled boiled water for:

  • drinking
  • preparing food
  • preparing baby formula
  • brushing teeth.

  • For non‑urgent medical needs, visit the Palmerston Medicare Urgent Care Clinic
    • Walk‑in service for urgent, non‑emergency care
    • Open 7 days a week, 8am to 6pm

Animal welfare

Pets belonging to residents are being cared for by Police in the community.
