March 2023 flooding

The Northern Territory (NT) experienced severe flooding due to a tropical low over the Daly, Tiwi, and Gregory districts in early March.

Communities and surrounding homelands affected included:

  • Kalkaringi
  • Daguragu
  • Pigeon Hole.

The NT Government sent teams to assess the damage and plan for recovery and repatriation efforts. This included checking damage to buildings and service infrastructure, the quality of drinking water and sewerage, and road conditions.

Repatriations to Kalkarindji and Daguragu began in staged approaches from the end of March 2023 and were completed on 26 April 2023.

Pigeon Hole residents are to be relocated to temporary accommodation in Yarralin on 30 April. The two communities have close family and cultural ties and this way residents can return to country while their homes are still under repair.
