Keeping Safe Near Controlled Fires
The dry season often sees an increase in wildfires in the Territory. Every year dangerous wildfires occur, threatening loss of property, assets and stock in rural and remote locations.
Controlled fires are an important part of wildfire risk reduction in the Top End. Bushfires NT Volunteer Brigades are currently conducting prescribed burns throughout the rural area to reduce fuel loads and protect subdivisions and homes from the threat of wildfire later in the fire season.
These burns can create heavy smoke, and while driving through these conditions, drivers are advised to:
- Turn on your headlights
- Slow down and drive cautiously
- Follow directions of police and fire fighters if present; and
- If you cannot see clearly, pull over to the side of the road, stop your vehicle, and wait until the smoke clears.
